Really? IIRC, isn't Gilgamesh mostly significant for being one of the oldest works of literature that we know of, as opposed to being one of the greatest?

That's not a rhetorical question, by the way — I haven't read it, so I don't know. I extrapolated that conclusion because I originally learned about Gilgamesh not in an English or literature class, but in a history class, as part of the study of Ancient Mesopotamia. Again, though, that's just my experience.

Incidentally, I hear that to get the full Epic of Gilgamesh vibe you've really gotta read it in the original Akkadian cuneiform. ;-) Shit, Mel Gibson is probably trying to make it into another random ancient-world gibberish movie. Unless he finds out that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akkadian_language"/ rel="nofollow">Akkadian was a Semitic language, in which case he'll pull the plug.

Nice going, Rebecca - that's impressive! Good luck with your ten-more goal. :)

My only advice: avoid Beowulf. It's boring as all hell.

I've read 14 from this list and intend to read at least 10 of these before summer ends. Which i'm quite proud of considering I'm not even a freshman in highschool yet.

Several of my commenters have pointed out that the list now claimed to be from the BBC was originally printed in the Guardian and was based on a poll for World Book Day 2007. My post has been updated to reflect this.
