dude, i hate to disagree w/you on my first visit to your blog

I love that you disagree with me on your first visit to my blog. I've been trying to get someone to come here and disagree with me for three years.

Duly noted; I haven't seen The Wedding, so I can't speak to how it compares to this movie. My reaction to Altman's films has been the very definition of "hit-or-miss" - I either like them very much (e.g., The Player, Short Cuts, Gosford Park), or I find them completely inaccessible (Popeye, The Gingerbread Man, Nashville, MASH).

sayles was far better w/lonestar or brother from another planet. here he was wandering

For the sake of accuracy, John Sayles didn't direct Rachel Getting Married. You've got him mixed up with Jonathan Demme, who did. I can see why you might do so, though; the intimate scale and slice-of-life tone of Rachel are similar the feel of Sayles' movies.

he was wandering w/o a point, every scene could have been cut by half, and i really wanted to know more about the other characters.

Here we simply disagree. To me, there was not a single wasted moment. Every look out the window at the tent being erected, every step trailing Anne Hathaway down the hall, every sideways glance that the peripheral people do or don't steal at her, they all build our understanding of Kym feeling like she's in a fishbowl. She's like a beautiful but not-fully-domesticated house pet - her family loves her, but even they are crossing their fingers that she doesn't maul anybody or poop on the sofa.

dude, i hate to disagree w/you on my first visit to your blog, but if you want to see this movie done right, see robert altman's "the wedding."

granted the acting was uniformly good, but i'm getting tired of saying that when i walk out of a film ("well...the acting was good...")

sayles was far better w/lonestar or brother from another planet. here he was wandering w/o a point, every scene could have been cut by half, and i really wanted to know more about the other characters.

oh well, the good news is i've put you on my blogroll!

What a great write up, Derek! You are so immensely talented with words. I really loved the film, and I especially thought Rosemarie Dewitt held her own beautifully and gave a standout performance among all the other great performances. I think it's a shame that "bride wars" had to come out after this film...Anne Hathaway shouldn't have to do the kind of crap anymore.
